Nepal at a Glance
The Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia, between India and China. It is a small country that covers only 147,181 sq. km of land and is home to the 10 highest peaks in the world. Nepal is divided into three main regions: the mountainous, central hill range, and Terai flatlands, with the highest elevation being 8848m (Mt. Everest) and the lowest being 70m ( Kanchan Kalan). The climate around the nation varies from brisk summers and extreme winters in the Himalayas to subtropical summers and mild winters in the south. The natural scenery, majestic high mountains, incomparable cultural heritage, and numerous specialties have made Nepal a well-known destination in the world of tourism.
The capital city of Nepal is Kathmandu, located in the central region. It is the only country in the world that does not have a rectangular shaped flag. Although Nepal is a small country, it
has a population of more than 29 million people and is divided into a diverse, 125 caste and ethnic groups, speaking over 123 languages. The majority of the people are Hindus (81.3%), while
Buddhism, Islam, Kiranti, and Christianity are widely followed too. Since the hilly areas are extremely fertile, the mainstay of the economy is agriculture and agricultural industries, with a large portion of 69% of the population engaged in it. Other than that, tourism and foreign remittances also contribute to the economy.
There are 1O UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Nepal, which includes Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Stupa. Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Changu Narayan Temple. Lumbini, Chitwan National Park and Sagarmatha National Park. As much as a home to the people, it is also home to a number of endangered animals and plants, protected by multiple national parks and reserves. Nepal is a developing country, with great potential and impeccable beauty, captivating people of the world.
Trekking in Nepal
The Everest Region
Everest Base Camp Trek: With most of the route above 3000rri, the trek goes up to the Everest Base Camp and Kalapathhar offering never to be forgotten views of the Everest Himalayan Range.
The Gokyo Lakes: A tougher and more exhilarating experience is offered by the treks direct to Gokyo or crossing over hirrratayan passes to Gokyo from Everest region.
Trekking Peaks: Misnomers in the sense that fur’? mountaineering gear is required, the Everest region offers Island Peak (Imja Tse) and Mere Peak as treks that offer full scale climbing experience.
Annapurna Himalayas
Northern Circuit: Durnre to Jomosom
Crossing Thorung La (the biggest Pass), this trek is one of oldest routes and provides stunning views of the mountain ranges.
Southern Circuit: Pokhara to Jomosom
Trekking between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains, one passes from predominately Hindu areas to that of Tibetan Buddhism with scenic villages as Ghorepani and Tatopani on the way.
Annapurna Base Camp: This nine day trip reaches the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary with with superb views of Annapurna South and Macchapuchare.
The Royal Trek: The most pleasant of the milder treks (almost resembling hiking), the trait follows that taken by Prince Charles and ends in northeastern lakes of Pokhara, Begnas or Rupa Tal depending upon the final leg of the trip.
Mustang Trek: The Kingdom within a Kingdom, Mustang offers trekking into a barren landscape and bleak existence, similar to the Tibetan plateau.
The Langtang Experience
Described as one of the most beautiful valleys by Tilman, Langtang offers the milder Helambu Trek and the tougher Gosaiokunda & Langtang treks, which are open almost all through the year. Short arid long forays into the valley are possible depending upon one’s interest arid time constraints.
The Eastern Himalayas
Makalu Base Camp: Passing through the Makalu National park, the -and point Makalu Base Camp offers fantastic views of Everest, Makalu and Lhotse.
Kangchenjunga Base Camp: An aiteraate for the serious trekker, the region has a high concentration of peaks and much of the trek is above 3000m through sparsely populated region.
The Western Himalayas
Rara Lake: This trek starts from Jornla and crosses over to the Rare National Park and is one of the less crowded routes.
Lower & Upper Dolpa: Trekking from Jumla and Jomosom (for Upper Dolpa), this trek traverses the Phoksurodo National park in Dolpa.
